Background

Iquitos is the capital of the Loreto Region, the largest in Peru covering approximately one third of the country. Loreto is located in the Peruvian Amazon, bordering Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil. It is only accessible by plane or boat.  The region has a population of one million; roughly half of the population is urban/peri-urban, while the other half lives in rural areas. The Hospital Regional de Loreto (HRL) is the public, reference hospital for this population and depends on the Regional Health Directorate of Loreto (GERESA Loreto).

The HRL is a public teaching hospital with ~130 beds divided into several departments, including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, OB/Gyn, ICU and Emergency wards. The hospital offers subspecialty care in: internal medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, neurology, nephrology, endocrinology, infectious disease, trauma care, ophthalmology, dermatology, ENT, urology, gynecology/family planning, oncology, hematology, psychiatry, and surgery (neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and pediatric surgery).

Clinical Opportunities

In addition to rounding on the wards, trainees on site will attend the “Curso Lapahs” in Tropical Medicine, hosted by the ID Department, where the course objective is to provide participants with a deep and multidisciplinary understanding of the challenges and opportunities inherent in the practice of Tropical Medicine in the Amazon (Diagnosis, clinical management and application of preventive measures).  Duke residents will be paired with local residents to foster the development of a research idea, and work towards a proposal or manuscript.

Research

Residents on two month clinical elective rotations do not participate in research.
