Tim Veldman, PhD

Dr. Veldman is a Research Scientist in Duke Global Health Institute and serves as Strategic and Administrative Director for the Hubert-Yeargan Center (HYC) for Global Health.  He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Indiana University, Bloomington, his Doctorate degree in Tumor Biology from Georgetown University, and completed a postdoc fellowship in the Department of Cancer Biology and Pharmacology at Duke University. Dr. Veldman spent several years in industry as a Project Scientist with two start-up biotech companies prior to returning to Duke to help establish the clinical genomics unit, serving as Director of Operations in the Center for Applied Genomics & Precision Medicine. During his 10 year tenure, he oversaw CAGPM expansion to over $60M in research grant funding that supported a diverse portfolio of host response genomics and precision medicine clinical research projects in infectious disease, cardiovascular diseases, neurology, and implementation science. Dr. Veldman led the CAGPM Neurogenomics Program supported by a DOD idea development award to profile and characterize biomarkers of Posttraumatic Epilepsy (PTE) following Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Dr. Veldman has published more than 30 scientific and non-scientific peer-reviewed articles. He is co-founder of the Duke Project Management Community of Practice (PMCoP), which caters to a network of 600+ members across Duke by providing project management resources, tools, training and networking opportunities as value-added support to team science research at Duke. Recently, Dr. Veldman’s interest in Global Health led him to take the position of Deputy Director of DGHI Myanmar Research Program for malaria surveillance and elimination.

Currently, he is co-lead for the Testing Core and leads the Research Pilot Program of the NIMHD/NIH-sponsored Duke RADx-UP Initiative. Dr. Veldman recently joined HYC leadership team as the Strategic and Administrative Director to oversee the development and growth of HYC Programs assuring alignment with its mission and goals.
