Blake Boggess, DO, FAMSSM, FAOASM, FAAFP is a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Family Medicine & Community Health.  He received his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University and attended medical school at Midwestern University, graduating in 2000. Dr. Boggess completed his residency and sports medicine & faculty development fellowship at Duke University, where he has been full-time faculty since 2004.  He and his wife, Amelia, have 4 children and 3 grandchildren.

His clinical and research interests are Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS), regenerative medicine for osteoarthritis, non-operative orthopedics, and global health.  He is a recognized leader in educating students and physicians in the use of POCUS and minimally invasive orthobiologic procedures.  He has directed over 38 ultrasound symposiums nationally and internationally, including locations such as Ghana, Uganda, Russia, China, Cuba, South Korea, Taiwan, and Germany.  His teaching focuses on POCUS as a cost-effective diagnostic tool in resource-limited settings.

Dr. Boggess has performed over 60,000 ultrasound-guided procedures and was the Duke principal investigator for the MILES study, a randomized multicenter trial comparing corticosteroid control to mesenchymal stem cell preparations for knee osteoarthritis, published in Nature in 2023. (Publication)

Dr. Boggess serves on the Executive Board for the NGO, “Ghana Make a Difference” (GMAD https://www.ghanamakeadifference.org/), which focuses on rescuing children from forced labor trafficking, abandonment, or special needs. He also participates in annual medical missions triaging patients for medical and surgical care, including local Ghanaians and Liberian refugees.

His recent work is in Peru with Dr. Ernesto Ortiz and Dr. Todd Cade.  They are establishing clinical and research opportunities for Duke students and medical residents at Vidawasi (https://vidawasiglobalhealth.org/).  They are also helping the Universidad Científica del Sur develop a Master’s degree in Sports Medicine. Dr. Boggess has been a physician for Team USA at the Summer World University Games since 2011 and has met with the Peruvian Olympic Committee to collaborate for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima.  He is passionate about global health and volunteerism and is honored to be part of the Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health, contributing to its mission and mentoring learners in humanitarian work.
